Toronto – On Friday, March 3, 2006, the Mendelssohn Singers present J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion, a musical recounting of Christ’s final journey. The concert takes place at Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe Street, Toronto. For this special concert performance, Noel Edison, Artistic Director of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, has assembled an exceptional cast of Canadian and British vocalists. Celebrated English tenor Charles Daniels, reprising his international role as the Evangelist, will be joined by English bass Peter Harvey in the role of Jesus. Canadian soloists include soprano Gillian Keith, bass Daniel Lichti as Pilate and Daniel Taylor, the highly sought-after countertenor from Montreal. Also featured are the Mendelssohn Singers, the 65-voice chamber choir of the TMC. First performed on Good Friday, 1723, Bach’s St. John Passion is the earlier of the composer’s two surviving passions. More dramatic than the St. Matthew, Bach’s vivid recounting of the crucifixion by St. John unfolds in several dimensions and includes passionate musical storytelling by the tenor Evangelist, contemplative solo arias, moving chorales and a range of magnificent choruses. The concert begins at 8:00 pm; a pre-concert chat with the CBC’s Rick Phillips starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $35 to $65 and can be purchased from the Roy Thomson Hall box office at 416-872-4255.
