National Ballet of Canada

THE BALANCHINE SEASON

Jewels

February 22 to 26

The Four Temperaments & Apollo & Theme and Variations

March 1 to 5

Toronto, Ontario…Feb. 3, 2006… The National Ballet of Canada’s winter season features two weeks of works by the most influential choreographer of the 20th century, GEORGE BALANCHINE. A special series of Ballet Talks will focus on Balanchine’s style and legacy hosted by Balanchine repetiteur LINDSAY FISCHER.

Jewels, Balanchine’s bravura triptych of 1967, will run February 22-26, and the triple bill features The Four Temperaments, Apollo and Theme and Variations from March 1-5 in Toronto’s Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts.

In Jewels Balanchine employs the particular qualities and associations of three of the rarest gems – emeralds, rubies and diamonds – to evoke and celebrate three very different composers. Emeralds is set to the music of Gabriel Fauré, Rubies to the music of Igor Stravinsky and Diamonds, to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

On opening night on Feb. 22nd, Emeralds will be danced by HEATHER OGDEN, PATRICK LAVOIE, REBEKAH RIMSAY and ETIENNE LAVIGNE. Rubies will be danced by GRETA HODGKINSON, JENNIFER FOURNIER and ALEKSANDAR ANTONIJEVIC. Diamonds will be danced by XIAO NAN YU and GUILLAUME CÔTÉ. Casting for the Balanchine Triple Bill will be announced shortly.

Balanchine repetiteur Lindsay Fischer, former dancer with Balanchine’s New York City Ballet, will host the special series of Ballet Talks. Ballet Talks, which are free to all ticket holders, take place 45 minutes prior to every performance in the lower lobby of The Hummingbird Centre.

Swan Lake opens the winter season with three performances on February 17, 18 and 19.
