For the last few years the National
Holiday celebrations have been organized by the President of the
Canadian Austrian Society Christine Meyer instead of the
Honorary Consul, Mr. Frank Stronach. No one really knows why he
no longer participates in this annual ritual. Inquiries remain
unanswered.
Nevertheless, the celebration in an intimate setting at Ms.
Meyer’s fabulous penthouse with view of the Toronto downtown
skyline are always a welcome event for most Austrian
compatriots. To fortify body and soul all manner of refreshments
were arranged in the form of delicious foods and
drinks.
Entertainment courtesy Manfred Petz and his ever willing singers
of the Edelweiss Choir, as well as Gunther Kunzelmann and his
endless supply of typical Austrian poetry and stories
and his
wonderful talent in presenting them made this another great
event.
Speeches were held to a minimum. Christine Meyer welcomed
everyone and
Dr. Luck, who replaced Dr. Schmidt and has already
become a regular feature at many events, retold the history of
the National Holiday. From the day that Austria was independent
after having signed state contracts that were ratified on
October 26, 1955 this holiday is a celebration of modern
Austria.
Everyone had a great time, even though the heavens opened all
doors and poured a lot of rain onto the city. Safely inside the
sun could be seen bursting out of the clouds illuminating the
skyline once again, just before the famous Sacher Torte was cut
by Jutta Sepp who we all remember as one of Austria’s Consuls
here in Toronto.
