Announcing an important partnership with
SOS Children’s Villages Canada!

Toronto will once again celebrate the New Year in traditional Viennese style!

Salute to Vienna is returning to Roy Thomson Hall on Thursday, January 1st, 2009 at 2:30p.m. to delight its audience with the glorious music, song and dance of Vienna’s ‘Waltz King’, Johann Strauss Jr., and his contemporaries. What a fantastic way to ring in the New Year!

This season Salute to Vienna is proud to announce an important partnership with a worldwide charity organization. With National offices based in Ottawa, SOS Children’s Villages Canada is part of the world’s largest orphan-focused charity, operating in more than 130 countries. With its roots in post World War II Austria, SOS Children's Villages has spread around the world as a beacon of hope for children in need. It provides long-term, family-based care to orphaned and abandoned children, giving them security, support, education, training and the life skills to become active and involved citizens in their communities. Just as Salute to Vienna provides joy and inspiration to its audiences, SOS Children’s Villages provides love and security to children in need. Visit www.soschildrensvillages.ca and help celebrate the 60th anniversary of SOS Children’s Villages!

Now in its 14th year, Salute to Vienna performances have continuously sold out in major concert halls across North America. Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, Place des Arts in Montreal, the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles are but a few of the 25 venues simultaneously celebrating the New Year with Salute to Vienna! This ‘old-world’ tradition has been strongly embraced by ‘new-world’ audiences!

A Salute to Vienna invitation has become a coveted prize for the best of Europe’s artistic community. Once again, a talented cast of both new and seasoned performers will grace the stages of all Salute to Vienna performances. Each Salute to Vienna concert boasts a brilliant cast of over 70 performers, featuring renowned international singers and dancers accompanied by a full Symphony orchestra.

The Toronto concert will be hosted by the acclaimed Maestro Guido Mancusi (Vienna) who will lead the full Strauss Symphony of Canada in this joyful celebration of Viennese music. The hall will resound with the beautiful voices of talented soprano Zsuzsa Kalocsai and distinguished tenor Dániel Vadász (both from Budapest) as they perform arias and duets from some of the best-loved operettas including "Die Fledermaus" and the "Gypsy Baron" by Johann Strauss Jr., or excerpts from the famous "Merry Widow" by Franz Lehár. In addition, beautifully costumed dancers from the Budapest Ballet will swirl and glide across the stage as they perform the popular Viennese waltzes and polkas live on stage.

For more than 70 years, Vienna’s famous Neujahrskonzert has been a sell-out.

Concertgoers purchase tickets years in advance for the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert in the Musikverein, whose stage is decorated with flowers given by the city of San Remo, Italy. This year’s star conductor will be Maestro Daniel Barenboim. The lilting melodies of Strauss, Lehár and Mozart will also soar in the sumptuous halls of the Habsburg Palace and linger in the cafés of Vienna where music lovers savour Apfelstrudel and Sachertorte.

The magic of Vienna’s New Year’s Concert is shared via television with a worldwide audience that numbers in excess of a billion viewers each year. However, North Americans now have the opportunity to experience a live festive Neujahrskonzert in not less than 25 major centers. Salute to Vienna is the only genuine re-creation in the United States and Canada of its Viennese sister and is officially recognized by the Mayor of Vienna as an authentic Viennese New Year’s celebration.

Celebrate the New Year with this Roy Thomson Hall tradition, Salute to Vienna, live on January 1, 2009 at 2:30p.m. and see for yourself why this is the World’s Greatest New Year’s Concert! What Nutcracker is to Christmas, Salute to Vienna is to the New Year!
