Merry Christmas and the best of Seasons from Echo Germanica

Winter is the perfect time to travel to Toronto as the award-winning WinterCity Festival presented by RBC offers a city-wide celebration of culture, creativity and cuisine from January 30 - February 12, 2009.

"Toronto comes alive with culture every winter as music, theatre, dance, art, and food take centre stage," said Mayor David Miller. "The WinterCity Festival encourages residents and tourists to get out during the coolest months of the year and experience the city's vibrancy and urban winter wonders."

A fourteen-day festival of big city fun, WinterCity is 3 festivals in 1: the WOW! Series at Nathan Phillips Square, the Warm Up Series at Toronto's cultural and tourist attractions, and the ever-popular restaurant promotion, Winterlicious presented by American Express.

WOW! Series at Nathan Phillips Square:
With free entertainment each festival weekend featuring outdoor spectacle shows, live music concerts and performing arts throughout Nathan Phillips Square and in City Hall, the 2009 WOW! Series will feature two unique and compelling open-air performances by Dutch group Close Act, well known for combining theatre, dance acrobatics and music together for their large-scale street theatre spectacles.

The free concert series on Saturday nights will feature Canadian crowd favourites The Stills and a double bill featuring Thunderheist and Shad - two of Canada’s heaviest urban music hitters. The RBC WinterCity Lodge will feature Friday night comedy shows, Saturday night DJ dance parties, and Saturday and Sunday afternoon entertainment for kids.
Themed skating parties on the historic Nathan Phillips Rink, dance lessons combining cultures from around the world and a spectacular fireworks finale round out two packed weekends of not-to-miss free programming that will surely heat up even the coldest winter days.

Warmup Series at Toronto Attractions:
Offering special activities, performances and discounts at some of Toronto’s leading cultural and tourist attractions, some of this year’s exciting new programming includes international cooking classes, a variety of top-notch theatre excursions with some of Toronto’s best artistic talent, a series of fun and educational workshops for kids and more.

Winterlicious at Toronto Restaurants:
Winterlicious offers two delicious ways to experience Toronto’s culinary diversity. The hugely popular prix-fixe restaurant promotion presented by American Express and a highlight of the WinterCity experience, Winterlicious returns with 150 participating restaurants in 2009. New restaurants to the city-wide lineup include Scarbourough favourites Joey Bravos and Joe Maggianos, Asian restaurants Bangkok Garden and Circle Thai, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, Bite Me and popular Distillery District hot spots Boiler House, Pure Spirits and Archeo.

Additionally, the Winterlicious Culinary Event Series features 12 one-of-a-kind ticketed gastronomic experiences hosted by some of Toronto’s finest restaurants and venues. Guests can pair beer with food, create their own culinary masterpiece, dine in the dark, combine food with fashion and more.
