Toronto, Ontario…NewTeatro Theatre Company is proud to
present The House of Bernarda Alba, performed in
English, by renowned Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia
Lorca. Opening September 22nd at the Papermill
Theatre, The House of Bernarda Alba features an
all male cast and direction by Venezuelan director Francisco
Orta.
Bernarda, a 60 year old woman who wields total control over her
five daughters, has just buried her second husband. In line with
family tradition, she has imposed a severe eight year mourning
period on her daughters. The women highly object to the order
but have no choice but to obey their mother’s wishes. What
follows will leave audiences profoundly moved.
The House of Bernarda Alba is one of the most celebrated
Hispanic plays in the world. Written the year Lorca was killed,
it expresses the cost of repressing the freedom of others and
explores themes of love, passion, pride and violent death. The
all female cast of characters have been cross-cast to give the
audience a fresh perspective into the lives and suffering of
women. The House of Bernarda Alba is humorous,
deeply touching and at its core, a heart breaking tragedy.
Each performance will be preceded by readings of selected poems
by Lorca and spoken above a score of traditional "Canto Ondo"
music. This presentation of some of Lorca’s greatest written
works together, in one theatrical event, is not only a unique
offering, but a rare treat for Toronto audiences.
Featuring a multicultural cast of emerging and established
Toronto talent and infused with the Latin flair of Orta,
this tragic-comedy will expose Toronto audiences to Latin
American Theatre, the brilliance of Lorca and ignite a spark as
only Latin culture can.
