Hansa Picnic
Well, I warned you last month that
this important annual
event was coming up – now it did. As we arrived it was obvious
that it was a colossal success, when we noticed that it was
difficult to find a parking space. It also wasn’t too easy to
find a seat at a table, but we managed.
The "Bratwurst" was excellent, as usual and the intrepid fry
cook, Herbert Gross, soon ran out of it and we had to resort to
"Weisswurst" – also delicious!
It was the ideal situation to meet people that one had not seen
for a great while – I know some of the carnival crowd were
present again, but that crowd gets thinner every year.
It was gratifying to see that many of the guests had brought
children and grandchildren to this event who were intrigued by
"Chester the Clown" whose presence could not be missed.
He was
painting faces – even for some grownups – and delighted the
children with his various tools of the trade, while they sat in
front of him in the grass.
Kudos also to the untiring efforts of Peter Henkel and his
accordion, to maintain a festive atmosphere for everyone. Not an
easy task, since the temperature was quite high.
I think the temperature was responsible for the long line-ups at
the beer bar. I hope the barflies had enough ‘designated
drivers’ for the way home. But people tend to drink pretty
responsible now and I noticed no one at the picnic that wasn’t a
perfect gentleman.
The new addition to the club proved to be a great idea, since
now the food service – including the delicious cake – could be
set up on the patio outside, without the revellers having to go
inside - to an overloaded kitchen - to pick up food and drink.
It sure kept the traffic inside to a minimum. We had already
noticed and commented on that last year.

Well, at least we had a few days of real summer, but I still
missed my ‘Kartoffelpuffer’!
As always
