TORONTO/CNW/ - Winners are George Axon and Aidan Mason for
their song "Love to Live in Toronto" that was named the winner
of the Toronto Song Contest this evening and awarded the grand
prize of $5,000, a prize pack from North by North East Music &
Film Festival and Conference and the Songwriters Association of
Canada, and a professional recording of the winning song. The
live finale performance took place at the CNE, where all 10
finalists performed their original songs.
"All the performers here this evening should be proud of the
song that they submitted," said Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone
before announcing the Toronto Song Contest winner. "Toronto is
known for its vibrant arts community and the talent we’ve heard
here tonight proves that to be true."
More than 20,000 votes were submitted by the public online in
support of their favourite song, which made up part of the final
decision. The remaining votes were cast by celebrity judges
Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone, co-host of CP24 Breakfast Matte
Babel, Etalk reporter Traci Melchor, and Managing Director of
North By Northeast Music & Film Festival and Conference (NXNE)
Andy McLean and Mayor David Miller.
"It’s been a pleasure to act as a Toronto Song Contest judge,"
said Melchor. "All of these fantastic songs - which truly
reflect the diversity of this city - celebrate the people,
places and cultures that make Toronto such a great place to
live."
The top 10 songs included:
- My City’s Alive by Major Music Productions (featuring
Terrance Cross)
- Love to Live in Toronto by George Axon and Aidan Mason
- The Toronto Song by Mr. Leverty and the TDSB All-Stars
- City Glow by Shobha
- A World in One City by Kevin "MAK" Watson
- Electrify Toronto by Lynzie Kent (featuring Maya Chilton and
Constant Bernard)
- T.Ode by Abdominal and the Obliques (featuring Notes to Self)
- One Hundred & Seventy Five by The Bradleys
- Toronto is My Home by Matt Hutch
- The Toronto We Know by Lynn Harrison and David Leask
Over 500 songs were submitted to the Toronto Song Contest as
part of the City’s 175th anniversary celebrations taking place
this year. The songs ranged in style from rock, pop, folk, hip
hop, and even an a capella performance by a local primary school
choir.

The City presented the Toronto Song Contest in partnership with
CP24, NOW Magazine, the CNE and the North By Northeast Music &
Film Festival and Conference.
