Canada Day
My Canada Day weekend was stuffed with canoe trips,
sunshine, water lilies, campfires, fireworks, good food, friends,
star-filled night skies---peace and freedom.
Today, on this hot and sunny Monday morning, sitting here
under a tree as I write, I think about how totally impossible it would be
for so many people to spend a weekend the way I did. We are able to live in
a bubble of safety and freedom in a world full of trouble and fear. It’s
interesting that the "Live 8" concert for poverty-awareness was held at the
time of year when we normally think a little more about how fortunate we are
to live in this prosperous country. When the power goes out, we can go chase
fireflies or happily eat melting ice cream by candlelight because we know
the power will come back in no time. What is adventure for me is a hard
reality for so many others in our world. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could be
more thankful for our beautiful and free country of Canada! Then our trivial
complaints would fade in comparison to all that we have.
Happy Canada Day and I wish you a good summer!
