A Rocky Mountain High: Harbourfront Centre celebrates The Banff Centre's 75th anniversary with a free weekend festival showcasing The Banff Centre's alumni in dance, music, film, visual arts and literature. A Rocky Mountain High: The Banff Centre highlights The Banff Centre's continuing contribution to the cultural landscape of Canada. Located in one of the most spectacular regions of Canada - Banff, Alberta's mountain location provides the context for much of the creativity that develops at The Banff Centre through its multidisciplinary residencies and commissioning projects and at showcase performances like the annual Banff Summer Arts Festival. The Banff Centre's musical legacy is highlighted by concerts from a diverse lineup of Banff Centre Alumni like San Francisco-based Canadian's the Afiara String Quartet, Alberta's Amir Amiri (Persian Classical and Jazz), Halifax's Jill Barber (Folk and Country), Bomba (Latin Jazz), Jane Bunnett (Cuban Latin Jazz), Calgary's Onalea Gilbertson (Jazz and Cabaret), Toronto-based The Gryphon Trio (Contemporary Classical), Ohbijou (Rock/Pop), award-winning Vancouver trio M'Girl (World Aboriginal Roots), New York based Torontonian Andy Milne (Jazz) and Edmonton's The McDades (Celtic and World) among others. Celebrate The Banff Centre's achievements in new opera development with excerpts from John Murrell and John Estacio's operatic sensations, Filumena and Frobisher. Hosted by award winning playwright and librettist, John Murrell, and featuring Canadian opera stars John Fanning and Elizabeth Turnbull. The Banff Centre's dance legacy is shown through Alumni performances by Calgary's Decidedly Jazz Dancworks and Toronto's ProArteDanza and Menaka Thakkar Dance Company. Since forming in 1984 Calgary's Decidedly Jazz Danceworks have performed more than 30 original Jazz Dance productions at venues across Canada as well as in Cuba and Japan. For more than 30 years Canada's oldest Indian dance company, Menaka Thakkar Dance Company have thrilled audiences with the stunning beauty of traditional Indian dance at performances across Canada and on tours throughout India, North American and Japan. ProArteDanza is a new, unique, visionary dance company (founded by former National Ballet of Canada dancer and renowned choreographer Roberto Campanella) created to showcase the best choreographers and dancers from both Ballet and Modern Dance backgrounds. The Banff's legacy in visual arts and film is highlighted first at The Importance of Being Banff exhibition (June 28 to September 2) where eight ceramic artists from across Canada highlight the Ceramic Residency at the Banff Centre. The exhibition features works from artists Robert Archambeau (MB), Friederike Rahn (BC), Peter Powning (NB), Joan Bruneau (NS), Bruce Cochrane (ON), Diane Brouillette (QC), Jeannie Mah (SK) and Greg Payce (AB). An exhibition will also showcase the winners of the Banff Mountain Photography Competition, a program of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre. Film screenings include the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour and selections from Bravo!FACT Short Films and videos. The selections feature works co-produced with the Banff Centre's New Media Institute, as well as works co-produced with the Centre's Aboriginal Arts program and works featuring Banff Alumni. The Banff Centre's literary legacy is revealed at A Rocky Mountain High: A Literary Celebration where International Readings at Harbourfront in partnership with the Banff Centre hosts a free early evening licensed soirée featuring Banff literary faculty, alumni and special guests including Marni Jackson, Jay Ingram, Lisa Moore, Karen Solie and Barry Dempster. Beginning in 1933, The Banff Centre has been a national leader and innovator in nurturing opera, theatre, and dance performers, visual artists and writers , as well as Classical and Jazz music artists.
