Varieties…
…no, not Ketchup or ice-cream but beer!
After judging 57 brands of Ontario-brewed beers – in 15 different
styles – the winners in the three categories: Gold, Silver and Bronze
(also referred to as People’s Choice) had been determined and were
honored here this afternoon.
The winners excel in the beer industry.
They exemplified creativity and were determined to succeed and win
awards at the fifth-annual "Ontario Brewing Awards" ceremony that
is sponsored by: Toronto’s Festival of Beer, the Esplanade Bier
Markt, Ontario Brewers and LibationNation.ca.
Roger Mittag, the Professor of Beer, hosted
the awards ceremony and consumer tasting at Toronto’ own nirvana
for beer lovers, The Esplanade Bier Markt.
Located in one of Toronto’s most historic
districts, The Esplanade Bier Markt has been known as the place
to see and be seen. Here is where you will find a selection of over
100 brands of beer from 24 countries. The European brasserie’s culinary
pledge is defined by season to ensure exceptional quality. Chic
and vibrant modern design augment
the stay as do friendly and knowledgeable
staff. Be it part of the journey or the destination, your experience
at the Esplanade Bier Markt is sure to be memorable. Yes, I tried
the Austrian ‘Stiegl’ beer – you must have noticed the Stiegl ad
in our paper – and found it very palatable indeed!
Breweries were judged in the following
categories: North American Light Lager, North American Lager, Pilsner,
Amber Lager, Dark Lager, Cream Ale, Pale Ale, Amber Ale, Dark Ale,
Bitter, Honey Beer, Wheat Beer, Porter/Stout, Specialty and
Fruit. I hadn’t realized that there were that many different categories
available and was amazed by that.
The Brick Brewery that brought us ‘Andechs’
beer – some time ago – walked away with 2 Gold, 2 Silver and
a Bronze
medal – that Teri Hetherington who represented the brewery at this
event, was very proud to display.
One brewery I had not heard of before
was the Old Credit Brewery from Port Credit. Aldo Lista, the president
– whom I also interviewed - walked away with 3 Silver awards.
Other breweries that walked away with
prices were the Robert Simpson Brewing Company, Nickel Brook, Mill
Street Brewery, Steelback Brewery, Great Lakes Brewery, Cameron
Brewing Company, Wellington and Granite Breweries, Niagara’s Best
Beer and the Hockley Valley Brewing Company. Congratulations from
all us beer aficionados!
As always
