Toronto … Black Creek Pioneer Village officially opened the
Black Creek Historic Brewery with a ceremony attended by the
Ontario Minister of Culture, The Honourable Aileen Carroll.
Minister Carroll spoke to the crowd and then tapped the first
keg to mark the occasion.
"The opening of a historic brewery at Black Creek Pioneer
Village is an excellent example of the cultural entrepreneurship
Ontario encourages and supports. Cultural programs such as these
help foster a creative economy and build vibrant, liveable
communities," said Carroll.
Earlier this year, Black Creek Pioneer Village was awarded a
grant from the Ontario Ministry of Culture’s Cultural Strategic
Investment Fund to assist with the development of the brewery.
Black Creek Historic Brewery, a working reproduction of a 19th
century brewery, is quickly becoming a popular tourist
destination for beer enthusiasts and the general public alike.
The Brewery uses only traditional tools, techniques and recipes
to recreate the ales, stouts and porters enjoyed in Upper Canada
before Confederation. The Visitors’ Centre at Black Creek
Pioneer Village is also currently hosting an exhibit on
Ontario’s rich brewing history.
"Nowhere in Canada can you tour a working brewery and experience
the process in this context, which includes a working grist
mill, a cooperage, the gardens, and then taste the results of
beer that has been made according to historic recipes and
methods," said Gerri Lynn O'Connor, Chair of Toronto and Region
Conservation Authority. "Whether you were a farmer involved with
growing the grain, whether you were a miller, a brewer or a
cooper making the barrels to ship it in, or whether you were an
advocate for a more moderate lifestyle that might not include
imbibing alcoholic beverages, it’s all part of a very
interesting past that we are sharing through the tours here at
the Brewery."
Like all of the facilities operated by Toronto and Region
Conservation, Black Creek Pioneer Village and the Black Creek
Historic Brewery are not affected by the current municipal
workers strike.
The Black Creek Historic Brewery is open daily through the end
of the year, (except December 25 and 26), and is
included with general admission to Black Creek Pioneer Village.
General admission is $15 for adults, $14 for seniors and
students, and $11 for children 5-14. Guided tours of the
brewery, including samples, are offered daily for an additional
$4. Black Creek ales and porters can also be enjoyed in the new
Black Creek Historic Brewery Restaurant and Pub, or brought home
in returnable 1.9 litre growlers.
Black Creek Pioneer Village is located at 1000 Murray Ross
Parkway, Toronto (one block east of Jane St., south off Steeles
Avenue, right next to York University). The Village is southeast
of Hwy 7 and Hwy 400. Parking is available on site. For more
