 July 2009 - Nr. 7

The Board of Directors of the Toronto Philharmonia Orchestra has elected Dr. Milos Krajny as president. Shaun Pilot has been appointed executive director.

Dr. Krajny succeeds William Jensen, who served as president for three years. Mr. Pilot has a 27-year background in arts presentation and production in Montreal, New York, Prague and Toronto.

The Toronto Philharmonia is orchestra-in-residence at the George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts. In 2009-2010, Maestro Kerry Stratton marks his 21st season as the orchestra’s music director and conductor.

Stratton and the new TPO management team have created an exhilarating and diverse concert schedule for the coming season. "We are especially proud of this season," says Dr. Krajny. "We have the Canadian premiere of the long-awaited Fourth Symphony by the internationally revered composer Arvo Part, Dvorak’s deeply moving Stabat Mater, and the Toronto debut of the young Swiss piano prodigy, Teo Gheorghiu, who starred in the award-winning film Vitus . We are also very much looking forward to another Canadian premiere, Frank Zappa’s The Yellow Shark symphony."

Shaun Pilot comments, "Operating with 1/30th of the budget of most major orchestras forces us to be 30 times more creative in what we produce. A far more daring and sexier model is way overdue. The great masters Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin et al have left us with much more than the majesty of their works. It is within the courage of their artistry that we’ve come to learn how boundaries can and must be broken."

Maestro Stratton enthusiastically sums up, "There's a new spirit at the TPO. Join us on this voyage of exploration and discovery."

Subscriptions range from $216-$352 for eight concerts, to $112-224 for four concerts. ($184-288 or $96-184 for seniors).
