In a cascade of instrumentation, a tide of tumbling bass and
rising flute, surrounding a lone, undulating voice, Van Morrison
ventures once more into the slipstream. "The 62-year old singer
from Belfast delightedly repeats the phrase ‘to be born again’,
as if he truly has been," says the Daily Telegraph in review of
Morrison’s Astral Weeks Live DVD.
In a career now spanning some 40+ years, Van Morrison has proven
himself to be one of popular music’s most creative and respected
singer-composers. He has given music fans a sizeable body of
brilliant work that has absorbed many influences from soul,
jazz, and folk to country and Celtic music -- yet always stamped
with the unquestionable Van Morrison sound.
Never before has Morrison set out to perform so many of the
tunes that so clearly characterises his celebrated career. This
time he will bring to Massey Hall a performance of his iconic
1968 masterpiece, Astral Weeks, performed in its
entirety, followed by a set of what he refers to as his "classic
songs".
This all began some 18 months ago with a now historic
performance of Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl
which was recorded for DVD. Since that time he has taken this
show to major cities throughout Europe and North America to
unanimous raves from both critics and audiences alike. Finally,
this show will come to Toronto on Wednesday, September 30 at
Massey Hall, the most intimate setting to date.
