York Region, On…Opera York in its 14th season proudly
presents the production of
La Bohème, at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Arts.
The opera opens on October 31, 2010 at 2:00 pm and has
performances on both November 4 and 6th at 8:00 pm.
La Bohème by Giacome Puccini focuses on the love between the seamstress
Mimi, played by Sinead Sugrue, and the poet Rodolfo, played by
James Ciantar.
Opera York’s co-artistic director Sabatino Vacca will be
conducting La Bohème
this production. Emerging talent from York Region includes:
Sinead Sugrue, Sara Papini and Rachel Cleland (who share
the role of Musetta). Having its roots in York Region, the
company is a catalyst for arts development in the region.
Opera York also works with international artists and production
staff. Tim Nelson, whose based in Holland, takes on the
production as stage director for
La Bohème. His concept
for La Bohème is
rooted in two fundamental beliefs about the work, first that it
is one of a very few perfect operas that convey universal human
truths. The second is that it benefits from a simple touch that
illuminates its beauty, but does not get in the way of its
sincerity. For
Nelson, La Bohème is
about the incredible energy and power of youth, power to deny
and push back against the cruel reality of the world around it,
power in effect to almost create a more beautiful reality within
a world full of hunger, sickness, abandonment, and even death.
Opera York recently received the RAVE award from the City of
Vaughan. This award
was given to the company for its role in education and mentoring
young artists.
