October 2010 - Nr. 10

Toronto…Toronto Operetta Theatre‘s 2010-2011 season gets underway with a tribute to Jacques Offenbach on Sunday, November 14 (2 pm) at the St. Lawrence Centre.   Composing in Paris, Offenbach invented operetta as we know it and it was his brilliant ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD - premiered in 1858 - that set the gold standard for operetta for years to come.  Offenbach broke the one-act musical mold with this two act tale of hi-jinks among the gods of Hades and Olympus and the show, with it’s now immortal Can-Can, had a lengthy run in the French capital.  His initial success was followed by works such as LA BELLE HELENE, LA PERICHOLE, LA VIE PARISIENNE and THE GRAND DUCHESS OF GEROLSTEIN. These and other works assured Offenbach’s everlasting fame and the originality of his melodies allied with his comic impudence make performances of his works sure-fire hits in the present age.

Working with pianist and music director Michael Rose, TOT’s General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin has devised an afternoon’s entertainment built around the most exciting scenes in these and other of Offenbach’s greatest operettas. The cast will include Leslie Ann Bradley, Tracy Reynolds, James Levesque, Nicolas Guy-Buiron, James McLennan and Mark Petracchi  “I wanted to be able to project the Gallic flavour of the text as well as the music for our Gala Offenbachienne and luckily have been able to find a cast, completely fluent in French”, commented Silva-Marin during a break in rehearsals.  Collectively their performance credits are impressive and include the Winnipeg Symphony, Montreal Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, Calgary Philharmonic, Vancouver Opera, Tapestry New Opera, Calgary Opera, and The Canadian Opera Company.

After the performance, a President’s Reception in the Bluma Appel Theatre Lobby. Tickets for the reception are available for $30.00.
