October 2010 - Nr. 10

Just once a year we thank ourselves
For what we got and give.
Just once a year we praise ourselves
For all that we do live.
Its once a year that we remember
Who really cares for us.
And suddenly, long to December,
We get together thus.
With turkey and the trimmings all
We gather in the early fall.
We set the table rich and round,
Enjoy the foods we cannot count.
The table bends with treats galore,
And everybody wants some more.
Fruit and berry,
Wine makes merry,
Potatoes plain and sweet,
White meat, dark meat,
The cook, she feels her feet.
Cabbage red and cabbage green,
And did you know, and have you seen
What’s for desert just after that?
Where is the little pussycat?
You mean the red, the black, the white?
They are asleep or play they might.
Go for a walk, enjoy the garden,
The jelly mould has still to harden.
Have some cake and coffee too,
The hausfrau just went to the loo.
There she sits and rests her feet,
And picks from teeth some turkey meat.
When all is said and all is done,
We all agree: it was much fun!
And if we next shall get together,
We hope for equal sunny weather.
Thanks for coming, come again.
I tell you how and where and when.
Glad that it’s over for this time
The hausfrau sits and drinks leftover wine
Before she drags herself once more
Into the kitchen with a roar!
All those dishes, glasses, knives!
Don’t other men have cooking wives?
Thank God this happens once a year,
Or else I live in glee and fear!
