In the next few weeks there are a few
interesting performances and entertainment offers to be
considered:
In St. Catharines the St. Thomas Players are performing a play
written by Elaeonor Johnston based on “The Memoirs of Guenter
Scheimeit”.
Many of our community members might remember Mr. Scheimeit and
his family, who ran for a very long time a dry cleaning
establishment on the Danforth in Toronto. Günter Schemeit helped
a lot of people along the way while he raised a lovely family.
His two daughters, both teachers and musically inclined, are
well entrenched in the Canadian culture. We saw them grow up
into lovely young women.
The memoirs of Guenter Schemeit deal of course with his life and
the recollections of himself as a young man who survived WWII
and the subsequent genocide of the East Prussians. His life is
being performed by Justin Baird, the play is directed by Mark
Newby and performances are this October 16, 22, 23, at St.
Thomas Church, 99 Ontario Street, 905-684-2339. There will be a
reception at 7:30pm and the performance starts at 8:00pm. Any
free-will-offering is going to benefit the outreach meal
programs of St. Thomas Church. This seems to be a fitting way of
commemorating Günter Schemeit, who was hit by traffic while
delivering meals on wheels, an accident from which he did not
recover.
On Monday October 18, 2010 a very special concert is happening
at the Benton Street Baptist Church (90 Benton Str.) in honour
of Dr. Alfred Kunz, longtime local music guru , who enthused
thousands of young people and an adoring public with his and
others’ composition, with forming and conducting choirs and
encouraging singers for many decades.
His songs will be performed by a professional 20 voice choir of
well-known musical performers including Adam Braizer, Geoff
Tyler, Cara Hunter, Brently Charkow, Chris Wilson, Kevin Denis
and Christian Bellsmith, as well as others. This promises to be
an uplifting evening filled with laughter, memories, and of
course beautiful music.
The German community has been fond of Dr. Kunz for a very long
time. He has conducted among so many others the Concordia Choirs
for many years. The tickets are 20 dollars and can be reserved
at daner63@hotmail.com
or by calling 915-662-5291. The concert starts at 7:30pm.
In Toronto Via Salzburg is getting ready for another interesting
season. Mayumi Seiler and her merry musicians have prepared
another outstanding concert series. Their first one will take
place November 4 and 5, 2010. Brahms and Schuhmann are on the
program with Soprano Anne Grimm, Pianist Yuval Fichman and
featuring the narration of Colin Fox. Tickets for the concerts
at the fabulous Glenn Gould Studio on Front Street can be gotten
at roythomson.com or by phone at 416-872-4255. And by the
way, season tickets are still available.
In Hamilton Opera Hamilton will perform Mozart’s
Marriage of Figaro October 21 and 23, 2019. This is a great
opportunity to put yourself in the opera….! That is their
slogan! Tickets start at $20.00, what a bargain! Call
905-527-7627X236, or go to
www.operahamilton.ca and get to know your Hamilton Opera and
