Toronto Special Events - Summer in Toronto wouldn’t be complete without the four all ages free summer programs at Nathan Phillips Square and Mel Lastman Square that reflect Toronto’s vibrancy and activity. Canada Day celebrations and fireworks, live music and the Farmers’ Market at Fresh Wednesdays, an international BBQ and live entertainment at Tasty Thursdays and music under the stars at Sunday Serenades add to Toronto’s sensational summer festival line-up. Canada Day is celebrated in style at Mel Lastman Square from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, July 1. The celebration of the 138th birthday of the nation combines great Canadian music acts and a spectacular fireworks finale. Sunday Serenades, a weekly concert series at Mel Lastman Square, brings the smooth sounds of the city’s best swing, big band and jazz acts to Toronto’s warm summer evenings. Swing dance enthusiasts will have a chance to show off their moves under the stars at these free concerts. For 2005 Sunday Serenades run every Sunday evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. between July 17 and August 28. Wednesday is a great day for visitors to enjoy Nathan Phillips Square during the summer months. Fresh Wednesdays feature the Farmers’ Market offering an incredible selection of fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, baked goods and more from Ontario farmers. The market is complemented by the addition of live music. Fresh Wednesdays run Wednesday afternoons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. between July 13 and August 24. The Farmers’ Market opens June 1 and continues through October 5, 2005. Tasty Thursdays is another weekly event in Nathan Phillips Square combining delicious food at great prices and free noon hour concerts. Each week a selection of Toronto restaurants bring international cuisine to the square with food ranging from BBQ to noodles and stir fry to fresh salads. This series also features seven weeks of diverse concerts by well-known musicians. Tasty Thursdays run Thursday afternoons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. between July 14 and August 25. More information on all four programmes will be released in the coming months.
