Brent Butt has built a comedy empire on his special brand of
coffee-shop humour, touching on topics as varied as world domination
to the best kind of socks to wear. Tisdale Saskatchewan’s gift to
Canada, via CTV’s smash comedy hit Corner Gas, Brent Butt does stand-up,
entertaining with his unique take on life. A project in the works
is Hiccups, a new half-hour comedy which started shooting in Vancouver
this past October. Brent will stay behind the camera for this series,
serving as executive producer and writer. It will star Corner Gas’
Nancy Robertson as a children’s author who needs anger management.
Brent Butt was born in Tisdale (population: 3,000) on August 3,
1966 on the same day that legendary comedian Lenny Bruce died. The
youngest of seven children (true to form: youngest-borns often wind
up as performers or at least in entertainment), Brent discovered
that making people laugh was the quickest way to get their attention.
In an environment where a sharp wit triumphed over slapstick, Brent
learned to "work clean" at a very early age. When Brent realized
there was only so far he could in stand-up in Tisdale, he trekked
east to Toronto and before long took on gigs performing for huge
crowds in North America.
Brent’s style is comfortable, relaxed – as down to earth as he is.
"My friends and I used to sit in the local coffee shop, literally
for hours, just talking. We would discuss everything from the most
far-fetched to the totally mundane." Butt says, "That’s what I try
to recapture onstage, that easy style. The jokes naturally build
and multiply in that situation. You don’t have to force them".
Brent’s career has continued to build momentum over the years. From
doing Television Specials on every network in Canada (and a few
cable channels) to sold out concert shows in theatres across the
country, Brent established himself as one of Canada’s favourite
funnymen. In 2003, he teamed up with CTV to create the hugely popular
sitcom Corner Gas. The ratings for the show went through the roof,
averaging over a million viewers per episode - with re-runs of the
show even drawing in a million plus each week. The show boasts well
over 1.53 million views. Not bad for a guy from small-town Saskatchewan.
Brent continues to live in Vancouver and tours extensively across
the country when not taping Corner Gas, which will conclude at the
end of this season, after six successful seasons.
