Seasonal Music

Via Salzburg’s Festive Concert

Glenn Gould, dressed for the seasonAs the audience arrived at Front Street they were greeted by a well dressed up Glenn Gould, who sat statuesque on his bench with tuck on top and scarf entwined around his neck in front of the CBC Building where the Glenn Gould studio is located. Opposite, just south of the Metropolitan Congress Centre across the street Toronto’s shining beacon, all dressed up in icy blue lights, poked a hole into the clear sky, punctuating how crisp the chilly evening air was.

Inside the smell of welcoming coffee wafted around the lobby as people milled about waiting to go in for the season’s second concert. The program promised a real treat, as is to be expected when Mayumi Seiler and her merry orchestra put on a program. This time everyone as introduced in humorous fashion by Benjamin Bowman, principal violin, who has been with the chamber orchestra for quite a while, as have many of the musicians. However, there is always a new face and the exciting guest artists always vary. This time we were surprised with Lutenist Lucas Harris, who’s great skills became apparent is the second offering by Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758) with his Concerto for Lute and Strings in D Minor. Since this was a Christmas concert the opening was eloquently accomplished with Arcangelo Corelli’s Christmas Concert.

Pieces by Justin Mariner, and after the intermission Guiseppe Tartini and Johann Sebastian Bach rounded a most enjoyable festive concert, leaving everyone felling relaxed and festive. And instead of rushing out to catch a cab or getting to the parking first, people stayed around to meet the artists and have a delicious truffle or two.

Naomi & Mayumi SeilerWe caught Mayumi with her sister Naomi, here from Hamburg where she is the principal viola player. Only then did everyone leave, still feeling the effects of the music, carrying it with them into the cold night.

Toronto's shining beaconThe next concert will take place in February and is named "Quickening Breath".
