Seasonal Music
Anyone who has seen the Soweto Gospel Choir either on television
or in a concert hall will go again and again to experience this
amazing group of people from Africa. As they filled the stage in
Massy Hall, dressed in their colorful costumes the audience already
feels the intense energy like heat spreading from the stage into
the ranks of the auditorium. Each one of the voices is unique as
a solo voice, yet together they sound extremely harmonious, which
is astounding, especially when they sing their rhythmic African
songs. It requires boundless energy to move that much and sing at
the same time, but no one appears to tire.
While the first half of the program was filled with traditional
African songs, the second half offered Christmas carols, Africans,
and international ones mixed in. ‘Silent Night’ never sounded more
original than in this lilting version, sung with a religious fervour
that has no equal.
And of course they also sing for a real purpose, which is to not
just enrich themselves but to raise funds for the incredible hardships,
especially for children, brought about by AIDS/HIV on their continent.
The audience was much appreciative and gave generously of applause
and donations.
