Toronto, ON.: Art of Time Ensemble has been described
by writer Michael Ondaatje as "a caravan of classical and
popular musicians. Art of Time leaps over the usual barriers of
cultures. The result is entertainment that is often thrilling,
often full of insights – as in the old values of art that
delight and instruct."
Singer, songwriter, poet, painter; Sarah Slean is an
all-around artist. Her first encounter with the Art of Time
Ensemble resulted in two sold-out concerts of intricately
wonderful arrangements of her chosen songs and the superb album
Black Flowers. The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy
Thomson Hall team up with The Royal Conservatory to present
Art of Time Ensemble’s Songbook featuring Sarah Slean at the
new Koerner Hall on Thursday, October 22nd
at 8 PM. Joining Sarah Slean are Art of Time Ensemble
musicians Roman Borys (cello), Ben Bowman (violin), Andrew
Burashko (piano), John Johnson (sax), George Koller (bass), and
Rob Piltch (guitar) for a program of songs by Leonard Cohen,
Feist, Sarah Harmer, Lynne Miles, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Ron
Sexsmith, John Southworth, Hawksley Workman, and others. The
program also includes works by Hatzis and Beethoven.
The Art of Time Ensemble was formed in 1998 by pianist
Andrew Burashko. It is a collective that comprises some of the
most unsurpassed classical and jazz musicians in Canada. Since
its inception, Art of Time has steadily grown in reputation as
an ensemble that undertakes and delivers programs that are at
once thought provoking and compelling. Committed to finding new
ways of blending classical music with other genres as well as
other art forms, Art of Time has presented over twenty programs
– each uniquely different in theme and content. Over the years,
Art of Time has collaborated and shared the stage with some of
the most accomplished artists from the worlds of Canadian
theatre and dance. Art of Time has also regularly collaborated
with singer/songwriter Martin Tielli (of Rheostatics) and jazz
chanteuse Melissa Stylianou.

The thrice Juno and twice Gemini Award nominated Sarah Slean
embodies a musical style all her own and has garnered a devoted,
global fan-base. Sarah’s songs have also appeared on popular
North American television shows such as "Party of Five,"
"Dawson's Creek" and "Felicity." Formerly a classical piano
major, Sarah has maintained ties with her classical and academic
roots by collaborating with several of Canada’s finest
orchestras and ensembles, including the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra, CBC Radio Orchestra,
as well as the Art of Time Ensemble. She composes and conducts
all of the string arrangements for her material. Perhaps the
most unique aspect of Sarah’s artistry is its breadth. In
December 2004, she starred in the musical film Black Widow
alongside Martin Tielli and Mary Margaret O'Hara. February 2006
welcomed her first exhibit of original artwork, accompanied by
the release of her first volume of poetry, Ravens.
March 2008 saw the release of Sarah’s fifth studio recording,
The Baroness. A collection of paintings and a second
volume of poetry by Sarah accompanied the album's release.
Citing such diverse musical influences as Glenn Gould, Tom
Waits, PJ Harvey, musicals, Joni Mitchell, Irving Berlin and
drawing from a host of literary, philosophical and artistic
favourites, Sarah Slean's unique artistic output continues to
inspire and amaze her fans. She is currently a student of music
and philosophy at the University of Toronto.
