 April 2010 - Nr. 4

TORONTO – On Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the Special Executive Committee meeting, Mayoral candidate and sitting member of Toronto’s Executive Committee Giorgio Mammoliti made Mayor David Miller a deal.

Mammoliti offered to vote in favour of Mayor Miller’s 2010 operating budget if members of council agree to waive the vehicle registration tax for low income seniors.
On Thursday, April 15, 2010, Mammoliti’s offer was accepted by the members of council.

In a 35 - 9 decision, Toronto City Council voted in favour of Mammoliti’s motion that the Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer be directed to develop an exemption from the Personal Vehicle Tax for residents who are over the age of 65 and who have a gross income of less than $50,000 and report on a implementation for the 2011 budget process.

This is one pillar in Mammoliti’s platform to benefit seniors if elected Mayor in October. As part of his platform, Mammoliti has already vowed to cut out property taxes for low income seniors.

“Seniors will be my number one priority as Mayor, and this is just one way the city of Toronto can repay its senior population that has paid enough. This is a huge win for Toronto’s senior population!” said Mammoliti.

“As mayor, you need to be able to work with all members of council to ensure that the best interests of Torontonians are being represented properly. Today, City Council did just that. It’s a good day for seniors in Toronto”.
