Spring Show 2010…
…at the Danube Swabian Club in Scarborough. A troupe of seven
German entertainers stopped by the club on their ‘North American
Tour’ on the 19th of March. They were introduced by
Cheyenne Kertes – the current ‘Miss Danube’ and Toni
Baumann, VP.
Toni Baumann also introduced the entertainers, the media and
guests.

Their “Tour” took them all over from the 11th to the
28th of March – with a show every night. Stops
included Indiana, Delaware, New York, Boston, New Jersey and
Pennsylvania, plus four stops in Ontario. Each performance has a
full program of about two hours.
The "Bergspitz
Trio" from Thueringen |

The show started with the “Bergspitz Trio” from
Thueringen and as the name might indicate, a lot of yodeling
could be expected. The accordionist of the group obliged and hit
some high notes that seemed to be impossible to reach for a man
of even his extraordinary talents, which delighted the large
audience.
Needless to mention, the club was sold out, even the mezzanine
was packed. Not bad for a Friday night!
Rudi Ecker
from the Saarland |

The next entertainer was Rudi Ecker from the Saarland. He
sang a number of wonderful old songs that drove tears of memory
to some of the more sentimental guest’s eyes – ‘Am Brunnen
vor dem Tore’ is a typical example.
Rudi Ecker was followed by a vivacious young Heidi from
Mecklenburg with more old evergreens. Thanks to the invention of
the wireless microphone, she was able to leave the stage and mix
with the appreciative audience. Her performances gathered lots
of spontaneous applause as did “Anni and Moni” from
Rheinland-Pfalz, who were next in line with more of a rich
palette of old favourites. This seemed to be exactly what the
audience wanted and when they mixed with the audience, off
stage, it really showed.

The space in the lobby was well utilized. Beautiful table linens
from Germany and Austria were on display, but it did not look as
if the sales were very brisk.
Kudos also to Peter Beck from the Mississauga Express for
providing his equipment to the visiting artists.
All in all, it was an enjoyable evening of good food, drink and
superior entertainment.
As always
