Loreley Singers celebrate the 35th Anniversary

The program said May 20, - my wedding anniversary - thanks for reminding me, but meant was the 20th Day of March, when a little over 35 years ago a few members of the Rifle Association decided to enrich the clubs activities with some Christmas caroling.

Interest grew strong and the following year at the annual meeting in March Kurt Wagner, who had been leading the singers, announced the forming of the choir. Kurt Heymann was introduced and took over the conducting of the choir. The founding meeting was held on May 22nd of the same year and the rest is history.

Olaf Rudolph as M.C. and Ruth HenningerAll this and many other things came to light at the anniversary celebration at the Lorely Club in Oshawa, and many pins for 25 year membership were presented. We also heard of 7 still active members, who joined 35 years ago: Otto Heller, Ruth & Heinz HenningerRuth and Heinz Henninger, Fred Lautenschlaeger, Irene Lipski, Herbert Schmidt and Peter Stenz. That is quite remarkable!

Beautiful table decorationWe enjoyed a delicious dinner and then listened to the musical entertainment. First of course there were the Loreley Singers with popular and familiar German folksongs, conductor Monica Cotton.

Then we heard The United Church Choir with four spiritual choices under Tim Southwell, followed by Heinz Ottinger with the Loreley Heimat Singers with some lovely choices, including various versions of Heidenroeslein, words by J.W. von Goethe and music by Franz Schubert, Heinrich Werner und Franz Lehar.

All choirs sang together “A song of Peace”, which was amazing, as was the heartwarming rendition of “Heimat” and a men’s choir offering of “Jacob’s Ladder”.

ED'S DJ & MusicI had forgotten how “gemütlich” it is in the Oshawa Club and am grateful for the opportunity to renew my acquaintance with that establishment.

Next the club itself is having an important anniversary. The Hansa Club is also having an anniversary soon.

Until next time
